The Nasikasika Farmers Cooperative in Macuata has significantly enhanced its farming capacity through the acquisition of a new tractor, made possible by the Ministry of Agriculture and Waterways’ Farm Mechanisation Program. This tractor is set to play a crucial role in promoting large-scale rice and vegetable farming while simultaneously preserving the culturally significant Korotari rice terraces.
Under a cost-sharing model, the cooperative contributed one-third of the tractor’s cost, with the government providing the remainder. Established in 2015, the cooperative comprises over ten active members from the Korotari area, who collaboratively engage in land preparation, planting, and harvesting. This unity ensures that production remains consistent and the quality of crops is upheld.
Cooperative President Sailesh Nand expressed his gratitude for the timely assistance, emphasizing that the new tractor would enhance efficiency, optimize land utilization, and support the livelihoods of members as they look to expand their agricultural activities.
Minister for Agriculture and Waterways, Tomasi Tunabuna, commended the cooperative for its commitment to balancing agricultural productivity with cultural heritage conservation. He highlighted that maintaining the rice terraces while simultaneously increasing food output aligns with the government’s vision for sustainable agriculture.
Tunabuna also encouraged cooperative members to continue their collective efforts and to maximize the use of the new equipment effectively. He underscored the role of cooperatives in enhancing farmers’ access to resources and their vital contribution to food security.
In a bid to foster future growth, the Minister urged young people and women to form cooperatives and participate in agriculture. He noted that organized groups not only enhance skill development and productivity but also promote sustainable livelihoods.
This initiative represents a hopeful stride toward elevating agricultural practices in Macuata, showcasing how collaboration and government support can create opportunities for better living standards and cultural preservation.
