Twenty students and six teachers have made history as the inaugural group at the newly established Namuka Secondary School in Macuata, a significant advancement for education in the rural Namuka District. This new institution aims to alleviate long-standing challenges faced by students, who previously had to travel considerable distances to attend Nadogo Secondary School or relocate to Labasa for their education.

Principal Eroni Matatia expressed gratitude to the Minister for Education for approving the school and shared the excitement among parents, teachers, and students now that secondary education is more accessible. He emphasized that all teachers at the school are from the Namuka District, fostering a sense of community ownership and engagement in the educational journey of their students.

“We are starting with 20 students, and among them are three or four who have been out of school for over two years. We are providing them with another opportunity to learn,” Matatia stated. The commitment of the teaching staff to guide and support these students towards a better future stands out as a cornerstone of the school’s mission.

Parents have wholeheartedly welcomed the new school, viewing it as a significant relief for families who no longer have to navigate lengthy and difficult travel, particularly in adverse weather conditions. One parent commented, “We are very happy about this new school because it helps us parents. Previously, sending our children to Nadogo Secondary was challenging, especially during bad weather. Now we can easily reach the school by boat or RSL.”

The opening of Namuka Secondary School, which serves Year 9 and 10 students, underscores the growing importance of education in rural communities. Parents and guardians are encouraged to continue their active involvement in their children’s education, as strong parental support plays a crucial role in achieving student success. This new educational opportunity marks a positive step toward enhancing the learning landscape in the Namuka District, promising brighter futures for its youth.
