The government has made significant strides in enhancing access to secondary education with the inauguration of Namuka Secondary School and the creation of Naweni Secondary School, aimed at bringing educational opportunities closer to rural communities.
Minister for Education Aseri Masivou Radrodro officially launched Namuka Secondary School, expressing that it fulfills a long-cherished aspiration of the Namuka community and underscores the People’s Coalition Government’s dedication to expanding educational access. The establishment of the school stems from a request made in 2024 by the late Tui Namuka, Ratu Tevita Navurelevu Niumataiwalu, ensuring that this vision will benefit generations to come.
Namuka Secondary School is welcoming its inaugural cohort of 15 students, comprising ten from Year 9 and five from Year 10, representing ten feeder villages and three primary schools. It operates out of a structure that dates back to the late 1940s, blending history with modern education needs.
Minister Radrodro emphasized the critical role of education in addressing poverty, inequality, and social issues, particularly in rural areas. The government is supporting families with the $200 Back to School Assistance and the eTransport program, initiatives designed to alleviate financial burdens and boost student attendance.
The Minister also highlighted the importance of the recently established Naweni Secondary School in Cakaudrove, which represents a significant achievement for the Naweni District and the greater Natewa Peninsula. This new institution will cater to students from 11 feeder villages, significantly reducing long travel times that previously contributed to student fatigue and dropouts.
In concluding his remarks, the Minister encouraged students to embrace this valuable educational opportunity and called on teachers to maintain their dedication to nurturing the next generation. The government’s commitment to improving educational accessibility promises a brighter future for rural communities and their youth.
