Ratu Suliano Matanitobua, the paramount chief of Namosi, is ramping up his efforts to tackle a growing drug crisis in the province. He is determined to lead initiatives in partnership with the Fiji Police Force aimed at raising drug awareness among the diverse ethnic groups residing in Namosi.

Highlighting drug abuse as a crucial concern alongside HIV, Ratu Suliano is committed to safeguarding his community from the severe repercussions these issues pose to society. “I am advocating for my people, including my Fijian and Indo-Fijian brothers and our Chinese and part-European members. We are unified in the fight against drugs,” he emphasized.

This week, Ratu Suliano held discussions with Policing Minister Ioane Naivalurua to explore strategies for addressing drug-related challenges. The dialogue stressed the importance of community involvement in the battle against drug abuse. Ratu Suliano expressed his dismay over the impact of drug-related activities on youth behavior, underlining the maxim that “prevention is better than cure.”

The initiative supports Namosi’s ambitious aim to become drug-free within the next three years, as previously declared by Ratu Suliano. If the province does not meet its targets, the timeline for efforts could be extended by an additional two years. The chief’s unwavering determination to eliminate drug use signifies a broader commitment within the community to promote accountability and resilience based on traditional values of collective responsibility.

This proactive approach not only demonstrates the leadership’s dedication but also serves as an inspiring call to action for other regions facing similar challenges. Ratu Suliano’s presence and engagement with local residents underscore the importance of visible leadership in driving social change through community initiatives.

The ongoing efforts of Ratu Suliano and the community of Namosi in combating drug abuse through education and collaboration point to a hopeful future. With shared responsibilities and strengthened community bonds, there is significant potential for transformative change leading to a healthier societal environment for everyone involved.
