Namosi Landowners Stand Firm Against Mining Plans

The community of Namosi firmly opposes any mining endeavors on their land, regardless of potential modifications to mining legislation. Sipiriano Nariva, the chairman of the landowners’ representative group, Lomani Au Maroroi Au (LAMA), emphasized their collective stand against mining, a decision they intend to maintain for future generations.

Despite this, Tui Namosi Ratu Suliano Matanitobua previously suggested at a Great Council of Chiefs meeting that the province may reconsider mining projects if the Act undergoes review. Mr. Nariva strongly countered this view, stating, “We do not support mining, even if the law is amended.” He highlighted that while the chief possesses a personal opinion on the matter, the true authority lies with the landowners themselves.
