The Namosi community has made a clear stance against any mining developments on their land, irrespective of potential changes to the mining legislation. Sipiriano Nariva, chairman of the Landowners’ representative group, Lomani Au Maroroi Au (LAMA), emphasized that their opposition to mining is resolute and will be upheld by future generations.
Despite a previous statement from Tui Namosi Ratu Suliano Matanitobua suggesting that the province may reconsider mining proposals if the law were revised, Nariva reiterated that the consensus among landowners remains firmly against mining activities. He explained that their priorities lie in sustainable development, largely due to concerns over environmental degradation that mining often causes.
Nariva clarified that while the chief has expressed a personal viewpoint in favor of reviewing the mining Act, the voices of the landowners are paramount. “We oppose mining in Namosi… we do not support it,” he stated, underlining the community’s preference for sustainable alternatives instead of mining or hydro projects. He acknowledged the possibility of a miscommunication but affirmed that the chief is well aware of the landowners’ position against the Namosi mining and hydro projects.
The unified voice of the Namosi landowners reflects a strong commitment to protecting their environment and heritage, showcasing the importance of community involvement in decisions that impact local ecosystems.
This situation highlights the critical need for dialogue and understanding between community leaders and their constituents. Positive steps could include more inclusive discussions and regular consultations to bridge any gaps in communication. It is heartening to see communities standing together to prioritize environmental sustainability and choose paths that align with their values.
