The fate of Special Prospecting Licence 1420 for the Namosi Joint Venture is now in the hands of Lands Minister Filimoni Vosarogo. The Mineral Resources Department has confirmed that while it is in the process of evaluating the technical requirements of the application, the authority to approve or reject the renewal of the licence rests solely with the minister.
Director of the Mineral Resources Department, Apete Soro, has announced that the concerns raised by landowners in Namosi will be formally communicated to the Minister’s office following a recent meeting. These landowners have voiced their frustrations regarding the situation and are demanding a prompt response, issuing a two-week deadline for the minister’s decision on the renewal.
Soro stated, “We’ve witnessed the atmosphere of the landowners, what they’re after, and as well as the company. So yes, we’ll go and convey the message to his office, and we’re expecting also that he can make a response or put in a response within two weeks.” He acknowledged the department’s understanding of both the landowners’ concerns and those of the mining company and emphasized his commitment to encouraging the minister to respond within the specified timeframe.
It’s significant to note that the Mineral Resources Department’s verification of technical requirements will be just one of many factors influencing the minister’s ultimate decision, which will also consider broader policy issues and national interests.
The Namosi Joint Venture, comprising international mining giants such as Newcrest from Australia and Newmont from the United States, as well as Japanese firms Nitetsu and Mitsubishi, has held the exploration licence since 2001, focusing on the copper potential of Nabukebuke land in Namosi. This partnership represents a considerable investment in the region, highlighting the importance of balancing local concerns with the aspirations of international mining entities.
Overall, as stakeholders await the minister’s decision, there is a sense of hope that a resolution can be reached that addresses the interests of both the landowners and the mining companies, paving the way for future cooperation and development in the area.
