Naitasiri Rugby Union has successfully gathered 60 players from across their province for the upcoming 2025 Skipper Cup season, showcasing a strong commitment to strengthening their squad. Scouting efforts from weekly club games have allowed the union to recruit talented individuals who will join veteran players retained from last year, such as skipper Asiveli Rokoua, Maciu Vakacabeqoli, Kaminieli Lutumailagi, and Sakaraia Soqonakalou.
However, the union’s treasurer, Meli Rokobici, acknowledged the challenges faced, including the loss of some players to other provincial teams due to work commitments and the delayed start of their club games compared to neighboring unions. Despite these setbacks, Rokobici expressed confidence in the current group’s dedication and preparation as the team gears up for what aims to be another successful campaign.
“We are the holders of the Farebrother Trophy; we will treat every team and every game as a final,” he stated, emphasizing the rigorous preparatory work undertaken in the off-season. Naitasiri will kick off their title defense against Malolo on August 2 at Ratu Cakobau Park in Nausori, adding a prestigious Farebrother challenge to the match.
The excitement surrounding this season is palpable, echoing sentiments shared by other unions in Fiji as they bolster their squads and prepare for competitive fixtures. For instance, Malolo rugby, newly promoted to the Skipper Cup, aims to make a significant mark in their first match against Naitasiri. Such dynamics not only enhance the competitive spirit within the league but also highlight the continued growth and evolution of rugby in Fiji.
As the rugby community looks towards the opening matches, there is an optimistic atmosphere that fosters camaraderie and encourages local talents to shine on the field. With Naitasiri’s historical achievements and strong community support, their season promises to be both thrilling and inspiring for fans and players alike.
