The Province of Naitasiri is set to honor the legacy of its esteemed chief, Turaga na Qaranivalu Ratu Inoke Takiveikata, at a funeral service on Friday. The service is slated for 10 am at Adi Arieta Memorial Church in Navuso Village. Following the service, Ratu Inoke will be laid to rest at the traditional burial grounds known as Natukilagi, a place crafted by mataisau (craftsmen) specifically for chiefs.

Ratu Inoke, who passed away at the age of 78, was a significant political and traditional leader, having served as Qaranivalu since 1997 until his death at the Colonial War Memorial Hospital in Suva on April 13. His life was marked by both political involvement and a deep commitment to his community. Known for his strong advocacy for the welfare of the i-Taukei people, he participated actively in the Great Council of Chiefs (GCC), attending multiple meetings aimed at addressing important community issues.

In the aftermath of his passing, the community is preparing to observe traditional protocols, underscoring the profound respect afforded to Ratu Inoke’s contributions. Restrictions on movement in the area will be enforced by traditional warriors (bati) to maintain decorum as the community gathers to pay their respects. Expected attendees include prominent dignitaries such as members of the GCC and several government ministers.

Ratu Inoke was not only recognized for his leadership but also navigated a tumultuous political landscape, being involved in significant events in Fiji’s history, including a conviction related to political unrest. However, he was granted a presidential pardon in December 2023, allowing him to resume his role without the burden of past convictions.

His passing is a poignant moment for the community, echoing similar losses experienced by other influential leaders in recent times. As the community comes together to remember and celebrate his contributions, there is an underlying hope that Ratu Inoke’s legacy will inspire ongoing strength and unity among the i-Taukei people.
