A stakeholder consultation is scheduled for next Tuesday in Nadi to finalize the town’s new traffic layout. The Fiji Roads Authority (FRA) reports that the trial phase of a two-way traffic system, which has been active for over three months, has now concluded. During the consultation, key stakeholders, notably those from the tourism sector, will have the opportunity to share their feedback and insights, which the FRA will consider when determining the final configuration.
This initiative comes on the heels of the Local Area Traffic Management (LATM) trials designed to alleviate traffic congestion in Nadi. Feedback from the community has been mixed; while some residents have reported improvements in traffic flow, others have expressed concerns over delays, particularly delivery drivers who face significant traffic jams. For example, delivery driver Rajinesh Prasad highlighted the challenges of hour-long waits, while local resident Penasio Bolekinaivalu suggested further enhancements, such as widening main streets by removing obstacles like parking spaces and landscaping.
The FRA has actively encouraged community engagement during this trial period, recognizing that local input is vital for refining traffic management strategies. Reconstruction work is set to take place from November 23 to December 8, followed by a new traffic layout trial running from December 8, 2024, to March 8, 2025, which includes various significant changes. These modifications notably include converting Queens Road to a two-way traffic system while keeping some streets as one-way.
As Nadi Town navigates these changes, there is hope that through collective feedback and ongoing adaptations, the new traffic management strategy will lead to enhanced mobility and benefits for both residents and visitors alike. The commitment to involving the community in shaping an efficient transportation system could foster long-term improvements in how traffic is managed in the area.
