In Nadi, a group of 25 young individuals has come together to form the Leo Youth Club with the aim of contributing positively to their community. Established in November 1975 with the support of the Nadi Lions Club, the club is focused on fostering responsible citizenship among youth in Fiji.
The club’s first project involves creating a bus shelter for the residents of Wailoaloa. Secretary Satya Nand Swamy, 18, expressed the club’s enthusiasm, stating they have already raised $230 through film screenings, which will be used to purchase materials for the shelter. Emphasizing leadership qualities, the name “Leo” symbolizes Leadership, Experience, and Opportunity for its members.
Swamy noted that prior to the formation of the Leo Youth Club, there were no active youth clubs in the area. Alarmed by the rising crime rates and negative perception of youth in Fiji, the club aims to demonstrate that young people can be valuable contributors to society. They hope to attract more members, particularly young women, as currently, there are only three female members.
In addition to constructing the bus shelter, the club plans to raise further funds to assist students in Nadi who are struggling to pay school fees, affirming their commitment to community support. Mr. Swamy encouraged local youth to join the group and be part of the positive change, stating, “Everyone can spare some of their time to help the society in which they are living.”
This initiative resonates with other community-driven efforts across Fiji, including activities organized by the Young Adults Development and Reform Alliance (YADRA) and Leadership Fiji, which both focus on uplifting youth and encouraging responsible citizenship through development programs and leadership training.
The collective determination of youth-inclusive initiatives reflects a hopeful future for Fiji, where empowered young individuals can contribute to their communities and overcome challenges, fostering a brighter and more resilient society.
