The Nadi women’s rugby team launched their Marama Cup campaign with an impressive 24-13 victory over Lautoka at Churchill Park yesterday. The team entered the match with determination and a strong game plan, demonstrating skill on both offensive and defensive fronts.

Winger Michelle Seruvatu kicked off the scoring in the 12th minute, although the conversion attempt by flyhalf Kelera Tinanisala didn’t go through. With multiple national representatives in their lineup, including Merelita Makata, Nadi maintained pressure throughout the first half. Aseri Galo followed up with their second try, and fullback Losana Kuribua successfully converted, giving Nadi a 12-0 lead at halftime.

In the second half, Nadi heightened their intensity, with Seruvatu scoring her second try in the 51st minute, which Tinanisala converted, extending their lead. Senikali Bori capped off the match with a fourth try, despite a missed conversion attempt. Lautoka managed to score 12 points through a penalty by Bulou Rokodinono and two tries from wingers Avolonia Lewaiwaca and Anabela Satala.

Nadi’s captain, Luse Vakaloloma, commended her team’s performance and acknowledged Lautoka as a formidable opponent. She expressed gratitude for their victory and encouraged her teammates to stay focused and continue working together as they prepare for their next match against Nasinu. “Losing is not an option,” Vakaloloma mentioned, reinforcing the team’s determination to maintain their winning momentum.

The Marama Cup is set to continue next weekend with further competitive action expected across the country, showcasing the strength and spirit of women’s rugby in Fiji. The community’s support for these teams bodes well for the future of women’s sports, emphasizing the growing enthusiasm and participation in rugby.
