The Local Area Traffic Management (LATM) trials in Nadi Town, launched by the Fiji Roads Authority (FRA), have sparked a variety of reactions from residents and commuters. The initiative is designed to ease traffic congestion by implementing new traffic flow layouts, which necessitate the demolition and reconstruction of some existing structures.
Currently, all traffic signals in the town area have been temporarily disabled. Delivery driver Rajinesh Prasad, working for Danny’s Pte Limited, voiced his concerns about the delays affecting his schedules. He expressed frustration over a one-hour traffic jam that impacted not only his deliveries but also his lunch break.
Conversely, local resident Penasio Bolekinaivalu noted an improvement in traffic flow but proposed further enhancements, suggesting that FRA should consider widening the primary street by removing obstacles, such as car parks and landscaping elements. Rima Chand, commuting from Sonasali to Nadi, acknowledged that the two-way traffic design could lead to fuel savings, though she too experienced lengthy travel times. On the other hand, Janend Ram preferred the current one-way system, arguing that it effectively minimizes congestion in the area.
The trial will take place in two phases, with the reconstruction scheduled from November 23 to December 8, 2024, followed by the trial of the new layout from December 8, 2024, to March 8, 2025. Some notable changes include:
– Queens Road will be converted to a single-lane two-way traffic system.
– Andrews Road and Raniga Street will be adjusted for single-lane two-way traffic.
– Naitavo Lane’s traffic direction will be reversed to one-way.
– Other roads, like Sahu Khan Lane and Market Lane, will maintain single-lane one-way traffic.
– Heavy vehicles will be restricted on the main street but allowed on alternative routes.
The FRA is encouraging community feedback throughout this trial process to enhance future traffic flow and reduce congestion effectively.
This trial represents a proactive step towards addressing traffic issues in the region, and with collaborative feedback, it has the potential to lead to long-term improvements in transportation for the residents of Nadi Town.
