Nadi International Airport has achieved a remarkable milestone by becoming the first airport in the Blue Pacific region to attain Level 4 Transformation under the Airport Carbon Accreditation (ACA) framework. This significant achievement was recognized during the Green Airports Recognition (GAR) 2025 event held in New Delhi, India.
The ACA, an initiative by Airports Council International (ACI), assesses airports worldwide on their strategies to manage and reduce carbon emissions. In line with this initiative, airports are encouraged to adopt innovative energy-management practices, including the use of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF), renewable energy sources such as solar power, and energy-efficient technologies.
Fiji Airports has been lauded for its dedication to aligning its carbon management with global climate objectives. CEO Mesake Nawari expressed gratitude to the entire management team and staff for their commitment to sustainability efforts, emphasizing that this recognition signifies Fiji’s role in addressing climate change globally. “Recognizing that our infrastructure is vulnerable to climate change events, we are mobilizing resources to do our part in addressing this critical issue,” he stated.
Prior to this, Fiji Airports attained Level 3 Optimisation in 2020, and the recent transformation to Level 4 places Nadi International Airport alongside globally recognized airports such as Japan’s Narita International Airport and Dubai International Airport. This upgrade is a testament to the ongoing sustainability projects embarked upon by Fiji Airports, which include the procurement of 14 solar-powered electric vehicles and the introduction of solar energy systems that power both street lights and airport signage.
Additionally, four domestic terminals at Savusavu, Matei, Rotuma, and Labasa have transitioned to complete solar power, showcasing a substantial shift towards clean energy in airport operations. These initiatives not only promote environmental responsibility but also reflect a growing trend in aviation towards reducing reliance on fossil fuels, which is crucial in the fight against climate change.
With these advancements, Fiji Airports is setting a positive example for others in the Pacific region, demonstrating that even smaller airports can lead in sustainable practices and contribute significantly to global environmental goals. The commitment towards a net-zero target by 2050 signifies a hopeful and proactive approach to future challenges in the aviation sector.
