A significant fire incident occurred in Savunawai Housing, Votualevu, Nadi, last Saturday, where a three-bedroom flat was fully engulfed in flames. The tenant was not present when the fire broke out, leading to complete destruction of the property owned by a 39-year-old teaching assistant. Thankfully, no injuries were reported during this distressing event.
Kelera Bosevakaturaga, who lives nearby, recounted her harrowing experience as she noticed black smoke billowing from the neighbor’s flat while caring for her two-month-old baby. She described how she initially thought someone might be burning rubbish nearby, but soon realized the smoke was emanating from the fire at their neighbor’s home. With her aunt’s assistance, she raised the alarm, and neighbors quickly came to help, attempting to salvage belongings before the fire authorities arrived.
The National Fire Authority (NFA) responded promptly upon notification, although by the time they arrived, the flat was already fully ablaze. NFA CEO Puamau Sowane noted that the building sustained approximately 90% damage, estimated to be about $80,000. The property was found to be uninsured, and investigations to determine the fire’s cause are ongoing.
This incident highlights the vulnerability of homes in the area and raises questions about fire safety measures. Similar situations were noted in recent months, including another fire that swept through a house in Labasa, which led to calls for better fire safety protocols and resources in rural communities.
In light of these troubling events, there appears to be a growing sentiment for heightened awareness and preventive measures regarding fire hazards. Community resilience often shines in dark times, as seen in the way local residents rallied together during the Nadi fire. This collective effort may ultimately lead to improved safety standards and a proactive approach to preventing future tragedies of this nature.
Through these experiences, we can foster a stronger sense of community vigilance, helping to create safer living environments for everyone.
