The Suva City Council is addressing the concerns expressed by vendors from the Nabua market regarding the temporary roadside selling arrangements and disparities in table fees. Acting CEO Tevita Boseiwaqa has clarified that those currently operating near a supermarket were temporarily relocated from pedestrian walkways due to safety issues.

Boseiwaqa emphasized that this relocation is a short-term solution while the Council searches for a permanent location for the vendors. “We are looking for a space where they can operate safely, ensuring that the rights of registered market vendors are respected,” he stated.

The Council is committed to finding an area that allows for public access without disturbing other groups and maintains safety standards. Once a suitable site is identified and the vendors are permanently relocated, table fees will be instituted, as currently, they are exempt from such charges.

Boseiwaqa noted that while the Council’s by-laws do not allow for compensation for vendors, their priority remains the safety and livelihoods of all involved. The council continues to work diligently to resolve these issues promptly, showcasing a genuine intention to balance the needs of various stakeholders in the community. This proactive approach holds the promise of creating a fairer and safer trading environment for both temporary and permanent vendors in Suva.
