The newly inaugurated Nabouwalu Passenger Services Terminal, boasting a $2 million investment, aims to enhance safety, comfort, and organization for inter-island travelers. Officially opened last week by Housing and Local Government Minister Maciu Nalumisa, this facility is set to alleviate congestion while providing ample seating for elderly and weary passengers awaiting their boat journeys.
Nalumisa emphasized that the terminal is not just about infrastructure but also about empowering communities and fostering economic opportunities in the larger Nabouwalu township. He remarked, “The $2 million terminal is part of that commitment because you deserve better,” reinforcing the importance of clean and safe waiting environments for all travelers.
The terminal features several amenities aimed at uplifting local businesses, including three food kiosks, a handicrafts outlet, and a hair salon, all operated by entrepreneurs from Bua. Nalumisa indicated that these developments mark the beginning of a vibrant town center that will not only create jobs but also attract further investment, fostering community growth in Fiji. He stated, “When the community grows, families grow. When families grow, Fiji grows.”
In a move to ensure effective management, the terminal’s operations will be transferred to the Savusavu Town Council, a decision Nalumisa believes is strategic as it allows local caretakers to align the facility more closely with community needs.
Looking ahead, Nalumisa also revealed plans for upgrades to the Natovi Passenger Terminal, slated to commence in January 2026. This progressive development is a hopeful sign of ongoing investment in infrastructure that prioritizes the welfare of the community and travelers alike.
