Nabala Secondary School, the only institution in the Northern Division featuring a drum band, has finally upgraded its musical equipment after a long wait of 16 years.
The Vodafone Festival of the Friendly North committee donated $8,000 worth of new equipment, including four single drums, one brass drum, and a set of four tenor drums.
Principal Epi Raikivi shared his excitement and gratitude on behalf of the school’s 14-member band, which consists of hostel students from Years Nine to 13, coming from 11 different villages. Raikivi noted that the Fiji Police Force had previously donated a drum set to the school in 2008, which has been repaired and reused since then.
He also acknowledged Master Seru Tuidravutu, who has been with the band since 2012 and played a key role in securing the new equipment from the festival committee. The band has been a part of the festival’s entertainment lineup for the past five years. Despite the resignation of their teacher earlier this year, his leadership was vital for obtaining the necessary gear.
Located about 33 kilometers from Labasa Town, the school’s band, outfitted in light blue and navy uniforms, frequently performs to support other schools, organizations, and community events.
Zaheen Ibrahim, president of the Vodafone Festival of the Friendly North Committee, emphasized the festival’s commitment to community engagement and music education. She explained that this donation reflects their dedication to community development and skill enhancement. Additionally, the festival had previously supplied $5,000 worth of equipment last year, alongside the recent $3,000 worth, as part of their long-term support for the school.
