Nabala Secondary School’s Drum Band Hits a High Note with Major Equipment Upgrade!

Nabala Secondary School, the only institution in the Northern Division with a drum band, has finally received a significant upgrade to its musical instruments after a 16-year wait. The donation, valued at $8,000, includes four single drums, one brass drum, and a set of four tenor drums, courtesy of the Vodafone Festival of the Friendly North committee.

Principal Epi Raikivi expressed his excitement and gratitude on behalf of the school’s 14-member band, which consists of hostel students from Years Nine to 13, representing 11 different villages. He noted that the school had been using a drum set donated by the Fiji Police Force in 2008, which had since required ongoing repairs.

Mr. Raikivi also recognized Master Seru Tuidravutu, who had been with the band since 2012 and played a key role in securing the new equipment by reaching out to the festival committee for assistance. The band has participated in the festival’s entertainment lineup for five years, and though the teacher resigned earlier this year, his leadership was crucial in acquiring the new instruments.

Situated around 33 kilometers from Labasa Town, the band, dressed in light blue and navy blue uniforms, regularly performs at various schools, community organizations, and events.

Zaheen Ibrahim, president of the Vodafone Festival of the Friendly North Committee, emphasized the festival’s commitment to community support and music education. She stated, “This donation underscores our dedication to community development, skill enhancement, and support for music education.” Ibrahim also mentioned that the festival provided $5,000 worth of equipment last year, along with an additional $3,000 worth in their latest contribution as part of a continued commitment.
