During the tribunal hearing concerning suspended Director of Public Prosecutions Christopher Pryde, Minister for Sugar Charan Jeath Singh testified that he was not involved in any discussions between Pryde and former Attorney-General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum. Singh provided his account regarding a photo he shared with Minister for Justice Siromi Turaga, indicating that a third individual was also present during a conversation between Pryde and Sayed-Khaiyum at a formal Japanese event.
When Justice Anare Tuilevuka inquired about the identity of this third person, Singh admitted he could not identify them, explaining that the photo was taken by Japanese embassy staff. He observed that the discussion between Pryde and Sayed-Khaiyum lasted slightly over 30 minutes, noting it appeared serious, lacking any joviality typically expected at such gatherings.
Singh revealed that lawyer Hemendra Nagan advised him that it was inappropriate for a DPP to engage in conversation with Sayed-Khaiyum, who was under investigation at that time. The hearing is ongoing, and Acting Chief Justice Salesi Temo is expected to offer testimony shortly.
This testimony underscores the complexities and sensitivities surrounding the investigation into Pryde, reflecting broader issues regarding accountability and ethical conduct in public office. As the tribunal continues, there is hope that the proceedings will lead to greater clarity and justice in this case, reinforcing the importance of integrity within the legal system.
