New Zealand barrister and Commission of Inquiry counsel Janet Mason has remained silent regarding the rationale behind two separate applications for the liquidation of her law firm, Phoenix Law Ltd., filed within 14 months.

The first application for liquidation was lodged by the New Zealand Inland Revenue Department in September 2023, with an additional application submitted in November 2024. Both were processed at the Wellington High Court. According to a technical specialist at the Court, the initial application from September 2023 was discontinued during its first hearing. Conversely, the second application is set to have its first hearing next month.

When approached for insights on the repeated liquidation applications, Ms. Mason declined to comment, leaving the reasons for the filings and the financial status of Phoenix Law unclear. This lack of public commentary has sparked curiosity and concern regarding the firm’s financial health, as it is led by a notable barrister in the region.

As the legal proceedings progress, the upcoming hearing next month may shed more light on the circumstances surrounding these liquidation applications.

Despite the challenges faced by Phoenix Law, there remains an opportunity for Ms. Mason to clarify the situation and potentially regain public confidence in her firm. With upcoming hearings, the hope is that transparency could emerge from these proceedings.
