A specialized taskforce from the Southern Division is collaborating with Valelevu Police to investigate a break-in that occurred at the Shri Santan Daram Mandir in Nadera. This incident resulted in damages to the temple wall and office grill, with repair costs estimated at approximately $250. Initial reports from temple authorities indicated that no items were stolen; however, conflicting media claims suggested that $1,500 worth of offerings had been taken, adding complexity to the case.

Commissioner of Police Rusiate Tudravu has emphasized the need for clarity amidst these conflicting reports, directing investigators to ascertain the truth and cautioning against the dissemination of misinformation that could incite religious intolerance. He condemned the act as a “cowardly attack” on a place of worship, underlining the importance of maintaining community cohesion and respect among diverse faiths.

To further assist in the investigation, K9 officers have been deployed, and officers are conducting house-to-house inquiries in the area. The police are urging the public to refrain from speculation and to allow investigators to verify the facts.

This incident is part of a concerning trend of vandalism affecting places of worship across Fiji, including recent thefts at other temples. Such attacks not only threaten the safety and sanctity of these sacred spaces but also jeopardize communal harmony. However, they present an opportunity for communities to unite, reinforcing their commitment to protecting these vital sites and fostering an environment of understanding and respect among different faiths.

The involvement of law enforcement in these investigations highlights the urgent need for community vigilance. With collective efforts, there is hope for enhanced security measures which can safeguard places of worship from future incidents, nurturing a climate of peace and respect in the region.
