Pacific Batteries Ltd has reported the discovery of a “white powdery substance” inside used car batteries collected from various locations in Fiji. The General Manager of the company, Diwakar Dubey, informed that the suspicious find was made during a routine battery breaking operation at around 12:30 AM on Thursday.

Upon the discovery, the management of Pacific Batteries quickly escalated the issue and contacted the Fiji Police Force, which responded promptly and initiated an investigation. Dubey stated, “Pacific Batteries Ltd is fully cooperating with Police and will continue to provide full access and support to assist with the ongoing investigation.”

As Fiji’s only automotive battery manufacturer, Pacific Batteries operates a lead recycling plant that processes used batteries from across the country. The process entails neutralizing battery acid, breaking down battery casings, and smelting recovered lead to produce new lead grids for their battery production. The company emphasized that the plastic packages were specifically found inside used batteries collected from within Fiji, reinforcing their strong commitment to safety and legal compliance.

This incident has raised concerns within the community, especially in light of previous discoveries at the same facility involving illicit substances. Earlier investigations had revealed substantial amounts of methamphetamine hidden in old batteries, which highlights an ongoing issue related to drug trafficking in the region.

As investigations continue, there is hope that the authorities will effectively address this troubling trend. The police have urged the community to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities. The combined efforts of law enforcement and community involvement are crucial in fostering a safer environment for all citizens in Fiji.

Engaging the public through awareness campaigns about drug-related issues may serve as an effective means of prevention, aiding the fight against substance abuse and contributing to a healthier community moving forward.
