Authorities are set to conduct DNA testing to identify a body found in the Dreketi River near Saweni, Lautoka, on Wednesday afternoon. The grim discovery was made by a group of young individuals who came across the partially decomposed remains.
Senior Superintendent of Police Iakobo Vaisewa, the Divisional Police Commander for the West, confirmed that the body has been in the water for several days, based on its condition. He indicated that, due to decomposition, the body will require DNA testing for a conclusive identification.
No suspects have been identified or interviewed in connection with this ongoing investigation. Local resident Watisoni Veiqali recounted the chilling experience of finding the body while on a fishing trip with his siblings. As he waited for them on the shore, a foul odor drew his attention to the body about 200 to 300 meters from the edge, lodged within the mangroves. Veiqali quickly notified another local to call the police and returned to guide them to the site.
This incident highlights the importance of community vigilance and the quick actions of residents in alerting authorities. As investigators work to uncover the circumstances surrounding this discovery, the situation serves as a reminder of the critical role that local communities play in maintaining safety and security in their neighborhoods.
While the discovery is undoubtedly distressing, the swift response of the police and the cooperation of community members offer hope that this case will be resolved. Further updates will provide more clarity and promise accountability for any wrongdoing.
