Murder Convict’s Assault Raises Alarming Questions on Online Safety

Edward Nand, a convicted murderer, was assaulted earlier this week by another prisoner at the Remand Centre, resulting in injuries. This incident comes amidst ongoing legal proceedings related to his conviction for the murder of Canadian Narendra Chand in 2023. Nand’s attorney, Sunil Gosai, alleged in court that correction officers were responsible for the assault, a claim that has been strongly denied by the Fiji Corrections Service (FCS).

During a recent court appearance before Justice Siainiu Fa’alogo, Nand displayed visible injuries, including facial swelling and bandages stained with blood. The judge ordered Nand to receive immediate medical care at the Colonial War Memorial Hospital. The FCS contends that Nand was hurt during a conflict with another inmate, not by their staff, and stated that their medical unit had treated Nand for his injuries following the altercation.

Nand and his co-defendant Salimoni Lagicere, who both face sentencing on March 7, 2025, were convicted of the murder of Narend Chand, who was lured to Fiji under false pretenses through a deceptive social media profile. The nature of this case has raised serious concerns about online safety and the dangers associated with digital interactions.

This incident and its backdrop highlight the implications and risks of online deception, serving as a critical reminder for the community regarding safety when engaging with individuals on social media platforms. Despite the distressing circumstances, there remains hope that the judicial system will navigate these complexities to ensure justice and enhance public awareness on this pressing issue.
