A significant shift may be on the horizon for the Fiji Police Force as a mother, grieving the loss of her son, seeks answers regarding his death. Seraphine Mock, the mother of 35-year-old Richard, reported deceased under controversial circumstances, expresses her intention to pursue the matter with human rights authorities if necessary.

Richard’s body was found at Nasau in Nadi, following a reported incident where he was said to have caused property damage at a drinking party in Wailoaloa. Police officially reported his death on January 18, 2025, and he was cremated shortly thereafter. Ms. Mock shared her anguish and determination for justice from her home in Raiwai, revealing that weeks have passed without any substantial communication from the police.

“I’m picking up the death certificate in the morning and will head to police for answers. We need closure and we’re not sure about the level of cover-up that may be involved,” she stated. During her identification of her son’s body, she noted concerning injuries, including thick bruises on his neck suggesting potential strangulation and other signs of trauma.

Despite police assurances of an ongoing investigation, Ms. Mock’s skepticism remains. “Half his head was black; the coroner said it may have been from the impact of a foreign object,” she reported, questioning how a scenario stemming from alcohol could lead to a fatal outcome.

In response to the case, Police Commissioner Rusiate Tudravu has pledged to direct a thorough investigation, indicating that if evidence emerges implicating anyone, appropriate action will be taken. His commitment reflects an effort to restore faith in the police’s handling of such serious matters.

This tragic situation underscores the importance of accountability and transparency within law enforcement agencies. Ms. Mock’s quest for justice resonates with many seeking clarity and resolution in the face of loss and can serve as a catalyst for change within the Fiji Police Force.

The community watches closely as more details unfold, hoping for a resolution that honors the life of Richard and provides solace to his grieving family.
