Moana Pasifika secured a notable 34-15 victory over the Swire Shipping Fijian Drua, enhancing their prospects for a spot in the finals of the Super Rugby Pacific season. The match showcased Moana Pasifika’s resilience after the Drua held early territory and possession but struggled to translate this into points.

Danny Toala was pivotal in the opening try, which he both initiated and completed in the 25th minute, diving over the line following a remarkable burst from his center partner Lalomilo Lalomilo. Five minutes later, Miracle Fai’ilagi extended the lead by scoring another try from close range. Just before halftime, Semisi Tupou Ta’eiloa added a third, giving Moana Pasifika a commanding 17-0 lead.

Fai’ilagi continued his scoring spree in the second half, extending the lead further. Although Tevita Ikanivere of the Drua managed to get his team on the scoreboard, the momentum quickly shifted back to Moana when Julien Savea, the club captain, scored his 63rd Super Rugby try, showcasing his prowess by diving over untouched in the corner. This brings him closer to becoming one of the top scorers in the league, trailing only behind celebrated players such as TJ Perenara and Sevu Reece.

Taniela Rakuro responded for the Drua shortly after, showcasing the team’s determination to stay competitive. However, Moana Pasifika sealed their comprehensive victory with a final try from Tevita Ofa just minutes before the end.

This win positions Moana Pasifika seventh on the table, just one point shy of the sixth-place NSW Waratahs, adding further excitement and hope to their campaign as they strive for a playoff berth in the remaining games of the season. Meanwhile, the Fijian Drua finds themselves at the bottom of the standings, struggling for consistency with eight losses this year. However, they still have a chance to turn their season around if they can harness the potential shown in glimpses throughout the matches.

Reflecting on their growth this season, Moana Pasifika’s performances demonstrate their tenacity and the cultural spirit of Pacific rugby, offering fans optimism for the future as they aim to build on this positive momentum and secure their spot in the finals.
