In an intense opening match of the Shop N Save Super Rugby Pacific season, the Swire Shipping Fijian Drua fell short on their home turf, losing 26-40 to Moana Pasifika at Churchill Park in Lautoka. The local supporters were met with a formidable challenge from the visitors in a match characterized by dynamic plays and standout performances.

Moana Pasifika kicked off their scoring early, with Tupou Ta’eiloa breaking through for a try just five minutes into the game, successfully converted by Patrick Pellegrini. The visitors extended their lead shortly after, thanks to captain Miracle Fai’ilagi, who added two tries within the first ten minutes, both converted by Pellegrini, showcasing Moana’s aggressive offensive strategy.

Despite the pressure, the Drua managed to respond with a try from Tuidraki Samusamuvodre in the 23rd minute, followed by a successful kick from Kemu Valetini. However, the momentum shifted again as Moana Pasifika seized control; the Drua’s Mesake Vocevoce received a yellow card in the 30th minute, leading to another try by Tevita Ofa, further bolstered by Pellegrini’s conversion.

The match continued to be a nail-biter, with Kitione Salawa scoring the Drua’s second try, albeit with a missed conversion. After halftime, Fai’ilagi notched his hat trick, although Pellegrini missed the conversion this time, bringing the score to 33-19.

A breakthrough moment for the Drua came when co-captain Temo Mayanavanua scored his first-ever Super Rugby Pacific try in the 62nd minute, successfully converted by Valetini, narrowing the gap. However, Moana Pasifika solidified their victory with Ofa Tauatevalu scoring their last try in the 78th minute.

The competition ended with Moana Pasifika leading the charge with a final score of 40, while the Fijian Drua totaled 26. Next week, the Drua will look to bounce back as they face the New South Wales Waratahs in their first away game at Allianz Stadium in Sydney, Australia.

This match set a thrilling tone for the season ahead, highlighting areas for the Drua to improve while showcasing the tenacity and strength of Moana Pasifika. Fans are hopeful for a strong rebound in the next game as the Drua adapt and learn from their first-round experience.
