Six passengers and their pilot are reported to be safe following an incident at Yasawa Aerodrome, where a landing miscalculation occurred yesterday. According to a statement from the Fiji Government, a GA-8 Airvan aircraft, registered as DQ-VAN, was involved in the incident after departing from Nadi Airport at 9:49 a.m.
Upon landing at Yasawa Aerodrome, the aircraft overshot the runway and came to a stop just beyond the strip. Fortunately, none of the occupants suffered serious injuries; however, the aircraft did sustain damage, particularly to its nose wheel and propeller.
Despite this incident, the Yasawa Aerodrome runway remains fully operational, and aviation activities in the area are continuing normally. In response to the incident, Viliame Gavoka, the Minister for Tourism and Civil Aviation, has announced that an investigator will be appointed to conduct a comprehensive inquiry in line with established protocols and international standards. The results of this investigation are expected to inform any necessary steps to enhance aviation safety moving forward.
This incident, while concerning, underscores the importance of aviation safety measures and protocols that are in place to protect passengers and crew. The proactive response from the government highlights a commitment to continuous improvement in aviation safety standards.
