The Ministry of Women, Children, and Social Protection has expressed serious concern following a distressing incident in Lautoka, where a three-month-old baby was discovered unattended in a locked vehicle. The infant’s parents were shopping nearby, leaving their child alone in the car. Fortunately, a vigilant passerby noticed the situation and promptly notified authorities, which played a vital role in rescuing the baby. The incident has prompted a police investigation into potential negligence.
Line Minister Sashi Kiran emphasized the severity of the situation, stating, “The extreme heat makes it a miracle the child survived.” She pointed out the alarming gaps in public understanding regarding child safety and parenting practices. She stressed that leaving a child alone in a vehicle, even for a brief period, is both dangerous and unacceptable. Kiran called on parents to prioritize the safety of their children above all else.
This incident is not an isolated case, as it reflects a worrying trend of increased child neglect, linked to the weakening of traditional family support systems. In response, the ministry is in the process of developing a Positive Parenting App, aimed at providing guidance and resources to support parents who may be struggling.
Police Commissioner Rusiate Tudravu also voiced concerns about child safety, describing the incident as “extremely troubling.” He reminded the community of previous cases where children’s safety was jeopardized, such as a young toddler found wandering alone near Laucala Beach Road. These incidents highlight the urgent need for greater supervision and care for children.
As authorities enhance child protection measures under the upcoming Child Care and Protection Act 2024, there remains hope that community efforts and increased awareness can significantly reduce such risks. By fostering attentive caregiving and robust support systems, communities can create a safer environment for all children.
To combat the troubling trend of child neglect, public awareness campaigns could play a crucial role in educating parents about child safety. The proactive actions taken by community members in this recent incident underline the importance of vigilance and collective responsibility in safeguarding children. Overall, this situation serves as a reminder of the community’s pivotal role in protecting its youngest members and ensuring their well-being.
