Beyond the headline

Minister for Public Works, Transport, and Meteorological Services Ro Filipe Tuisawau has called on his ministry staff to improve their performance following the revelation that a new vessel recently brought into Fiji had not been surveyed by the Maritime Safety Authority of Fiji (MSAF). He emphasized that, as a political leader, he cannot oversee every operational and regulatory issue, urging his team to adopt a more innovative and proactive approach.

Expressing dissatisfaction with current processes within the ministry, Ro Tuisawau has initiated a review of all vessel purchase procedures in the country. Furthermore, he announced that the transport industry, including maritime services, will soon undergo a comprehensive review, with the Terms of Reference (ToR) currently being finalized.

This initiative signifies a strong push toward enhanced governance and accountability within the ministry, suggesting a commitment to improving safety and operational standards in Fiji’s maritime and transport sectors.

Overall, this call for improvement reflects a broader aim to uplift standards and adapt to challenges facing the transport industry, which could lead to a safer and more efficient maritime environment in Fiji.
