For the first time, the media is set to be invited to observe the destruction of a significant drug stash weighing 4.1 tonnes in Nadi. John Rabuku, the Deputy Director of Public Prosecution, confirmed this development while addressing inquiries about the destruction plan.

Recently, the High Court in Suva granted approval for the state’s application to dispose of the large quantity of drugs that has been held in Police custody since the start of the year. Mr. Rabuku noted that the Police are currently finalizing the destruction plan, which will ultimately be forwarded to the DPP’s office.

He stated, “I can confirm the media will be invited; once everything is settled, we’ll extend invitations to all media companies to witness the destruction.” After the plan is submitted, there will be a 14-day period to inform the High Court before the actual destruction takes place. Mr. Rabuku mentioned that the plan will encompass essential details such as the timing and location of the event, which will provide clarity to those involved.

This significant step marks a crucial moment in the fight against drug-related crimes and demonstrates transparency in the judicial process, as the presence of the media will help ensure accountability. The public can look forward to a comprehensive view of the legal system’s efforts to combat drug trafficking.

Overall, this event symbolizes a commitment to public safety and the community’s right to understand how drug-related issues are being managed. It also highlights the importance of collaboration between various sectors in addressing drug-related challenges in society.
