NSW Waratahs head coach Dan McKellar is fully focused on his current role, dismissing speculation about a potential future as the Wallabies coach. Following Rugby Australia’s decision to appoint Joe Schmidt as Eddie Jones’s successor, McKellar is viewed as a prime candidate to take over after this year’s Rugby Championship. However, he insists that he has not been involved in any discussions with Rugby Australia (RA) regarding the position.

“I haven’t spoken to ‘Kissy’ (Queensland coach Les Kiss) in a couple of months, but honestly, I’m just cracking on and worrying about the Waratahs,” McKellar stated after a demanding training session ahead of an upcoming match against the Fijian Drua.

McKellar previously served as an assistant to Jones before taking up the head coach position with Leicester in the English Premiership. His departure was interpreted by some as a sign of disappointment after being overlooked for Schmidt. Nevertheless, he believes that his experiences abroad have only improved his coaching abilities.

Transitioning into the upcoming season, the Waratahs’ recent efforts have already shown promise. The team has restructured its roster significantly, acquiring notable Wallabies talent such as Joseph-Aukuso Suaalii, Andrew Kellaway, Taniela Tupou, Rob Leota, Isaac Kailea, and Darby Lancaster.

Last season, the Waratahs faced difficulties, finishing last in the standings with only two victories due to injury struggles within their squad. The arrival of players like Suaalii, who recently impressed in the national team, signals a bright future. His standout performance against England earned him Player of the Match honors, further energizing anticipation among fans for this coming season.

Despite the challenges posed by key player departures, including Mark Nawaqanitawase and Dylan Pietsch, McKellar remains optimistic. He emphasized the importance of building a competitive spirit and noted that while early wins are encouraging, it’s crucial to maintain perspective as the season progresses.

As McKellar focuses solely on the Waratahs and their upcoming encounters, he acknowledges the positive momentum building around the team. The infusion of fresh talent coupled with experienced players may herald a transformative season for the Waratahs, offering fans renewed hope for a competitive performance in Super Rugby Pacific. With teamwork and strategic focus, the Waratahs aim to overcome past challenges and reclaim their status.
