Temo Mayanavanua, a 27-year-old lock for Northampton Saints, has announced his decision to leave the club at the end of the current season to return to Fiji. This season, he has made 16 appearances for the Saints and was pivotal in the team’s journey to the Investec Champions Cup Final, having started in the recent thrilling 37-34 win over Leinster.

Mayanavanua joined the Saints post-2023 World Cup and debuted with the team in December against Saracens. Reflecting on his experience in Northampton, he expressed how welcomed he felt by the fans and the special camaraderie within the team, highlighting their recent success as a testament to that solidarity. He mentioned that it was a challenging decision to leave, citing the welcoming nature of the supporters and the strong relationships he built at the club.

Director of Rugby Phil Dowson praised Mayanavanua for his substantial impact on the team, pointing out not only his physical prowess and game-reading skills but also his role as a father figure to the younger players, stating that his absence will be felt significantly.

As he prepares to head back home, Mayanavanua is set to join the Fijian Drua, aligning with a noticeable trend of Fijian rugby players returning from European leagues to enhance local teams. This move will not only strengthen the Fijian Drua but is also expected to inspire aspiring young athletes in Fiji, as local talent continues to head back to contribute to domestic rugby.

The future looks bright for Fijian rugby as these experienced players return, fostering a stronger foundation for the sport in their homeland and providing an opportunity for younger generations to shine on the rugby field.
