Marist Convent Primary School in Lami is achieving remarkable success in its inaugural season of the Suva Kaji Rugby competition, recently defending the Challenge Cup with a 5-0 victory over Saint Agnes Primary School. This win, which took place during round three at the St. Marcellin Primary School grounds, has excited the team and its coach, Sepesa Curuki.
Curuki expressed pride in seeing his under-13 boys swiftly adapt to the competitive atmosphere of top-level rugby. After a long absence of over 20 years from the Suva Kaji Rugby, the team’s return has been met with enthusiasm, especially following their surprising upset against Marist Brothers Primary School the previous week.
During the match against Saint Agnes, both teams were scoreless at halftime. However, Curuki’s halftime adjustments made a significant difference. He instructed his players to focus on their movement and engage more actively during plays. “I just told them to fix some areas… to enjoy the game and stick to the game plan,” he said, highlighting their improved performance after the break.
Curuki also acknowledged the vital support from parents and supporters, noting that this encouragement has bolstered the players’ confidence. Looking forward, the coach emphasized the team’s goal to win the U14 trophy and secure spots for several players in the Suva Kaji Rugby team.
Such achievements reflect the potential of young athletes in the region, showcasing the positive impact of sports on teamwork, resilience, and community spirit. Marist Convent’s successful start this season not only bodes well for their future matches but also inspires hope for the growth of rugby among youth in Fiji.
As the competition progresses, there is an optimistic atmosphere around the school—a promising sign of dedication and hard work amongst young players aiming for excellence in rugby.
