Maria Kalesnikava, a symbol of resistance against Belarusian leader Alexander Lukashenko’s regime, has recently regained her freedom alongside 122 other political prisoners. Kalesnikava, who gained notoriety during mass protests in 2020, was forcibly taken by masked officers, threatened with deportation, and ultimately sentenced to 11 years on charges that included conspiracy to seize power. Her defiance was showcased when she tore her passport apart to prevent being sent to Ukraine against her will.

At her trial, Kalesnikava’s spirit shone through as she danced and smiled despite being held in a courtroom cage. Initially a flautist with an unexpected foray into politics, she was one of three women who rose to the forefront of the opposition against Lukashenko during the contested elections of 2020. Kalesnikava, Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya, and Veronika Tsepkalo paralleled their prominent husbands, who were barred from running, and united as a powerful political force. Their image became emblematic of the protest movement, resonating with thousands who rallied behind their cause.

Kalesnikava’s journey into politics began while she worked on the campaign of jailed banker Viktar Babaryka, and she later became a key figure behind Tsikhanouskaya’s candidacy. While Lukashenko declared victory amid allegations of electoral fraud, mass protests erupted across Belarus, resulting in numerous arrests and the exile of many opposition leaders. However, Kalesnikava’s commitment to her people led her to remain in Belarus even after her eventual arrest, which sparked further demonstrations chanting her name.

During her imprisonment, Kalesnikava faced severe conditions including isolation, inadequate medical treatment for a peptic ulcer, and reported torture, according to her family. Despite these challenges, her resilience has been a source of inspiration for many, as her name has become a rallying cry for freedom and democracy in Belarus.

The recent negotiations leading to Kalesnikava’s release highlight a shift in political dynamics within Belarus, as dialogue continues to open avenues for change. Her emergence from confinement not only represents a personal victory but also rekindles hope among those advocating for democracy in Belarus. The international community continues to support the opposition, amplifying calls for reform and accountability within the Lukashenko regime.
