Beyond the headline

A weak trough over the northern islands and a moist easterly wind flow across the group will bring periods of cloud and showers tonight and into tomorrow, with afternoon thunderstorms and locally heavy falls expected in parts of Viti Levu and Vanua Levu. The Northern Division will see the most persistent rainfall, while much of the rest of the country will experience cloudy periods with showers, and generally fine conditions apart from afternoon or evening storms.

Occasional showers with isolated heavy falls are expected across the Northern Division, affecting Labasa, Savusavu, Nabouwalu and Taveuni. Showers should ease later tomorrow in those areas, but localised heavy falls may cause flash flooding of low-lying and flood-prone locations. Cloudy periods with some showers are forecast for the Lau and Lomaiviti groups, Kadavu and nearby smaller islands.

Over Viti Levu and Vanua Levu, expect cloudy breaks with afternoon thunderstorms that may produce heavy rainfall. The Navua–Suva–Nausori corridor is set for cloudy periods with showers and afternoon thunderstorms (min 24°C, max 32°C), while Nadi–Lautoka–Ba should be fine apart from afternoon or evening showers with possible heavy thunderstorms (min 22–23°C, max 33°C). Sigatoka and the Coral Coast, Tavua and Rakiraki, and the Yasawa–Mamanuca group can expect mainly fair conditions aside from afternoon storms, with daytime highs generally in the low 30s.

Moderate easterly winds and moderate seas are expected for most of the group. Rotuma will remain under a moist easterly flow with cloudy periods, some showers and isolated thunderstorms, accompanied by moderate to fresh easterly winds and moderate to rough seas. Mariners and those planning coastal activities around Rotuma and exposed areas should take the higher seas and winds into account.

The outlook for Thursday remains similar: cloudy periods with showers across several eastern and northern areas, and afternoon thunderstorms with heavy falls likely over Viti Levu and Vanua Levu. Residents in low-lying and flood-prone communities are advised to be prepared for localised flash flooding where heavy falls occur, and all should take care during afternoon and evening thunderstorms.
