FIJI GLOBAL NEWS

Beyond the headline

A moist easterly wind flow over Fiji, with a weak trough expected to move across parts of the group later today, will bring increased cloud and showers for several areas and a risk of heavy afternoon thunderstorms across the main islands. Viti Levu and Vanua Levu are most likely to see intense afternoon storms with heavy falls, and localized heavy rain may cause flash flooding in low-lying and flood‑prone locations.

Cloudy periods with some showers are forecast for Serua‑Namosi, Navua‑Suva‑Nausori, Tailevu‑Naitasiri‑Ra‑Rakiraki, southern Bua, eastern Macuata, Cakaudrove, Taveuni and nearby smaller islands, the Lau and Lomaiviti groups, Kadavu and surrounding islets. Showers will become occasional over parts of the Northern Division from later today. Elsewhere conditions should be fine apart from the chance of afternoon or evening showers, but many centres can expect thunderstorms during the afternoon hours.

The thunderstorms over Viti Levu and Vanua Levu could produce heavy falls in short periods; residents in low‑lying and flood‑prone areas should be prepared for the possibility of flash flooding and take sensible precautions. Winds are expected to be moderate easterlies, fresh at times, producing moderate seas around the group. Mariners and those using small craft should be aware of the freshening winds and moderate conditions offshore; Rotuma will experience moderate to fresh easterly winds with moderate to rough seas and a risk of isolated thunderstorms.

Temperatures will be warm, with overnight lows generally in the mid‑20s Celsius and daytime highs in the low 30s. Local forecasts show minima around 23–25°C and maxima commonly between 31–33°C across the main centres, with small variations by district and island.

The outlook for Wednesday remains similar: the same areas can expect cloudy periods with showers and afternoon thunderstorms with heavy falls over Viti Levu and Vanua Levu. Winds are forecast to stay moderate easterlies with moderate seas for most areas, and Rotuma continuing to see moderate to fresh winds and moderate to rough seas with isolated thunderstorms.
