Beyond the headline

A weak trough of low pressure over the southwest of Viti Levu, embedded in a moist easterly wind flow, will keep much of the group under cloud and showers through tomorrow. Expect cloudy periods with showers and isolated thunderstorms across several eastern and central areas, while most other districts will see generally fine conditions apart from the usual afternoon or evening showers. Winds will remain moderate from the east and seas moderate around the islands.

Cloudy periods with some showers and isolated thunderstorms are most likely over the Greater Suva–Nausori and Tailevu areas, interior Ra, Serua–Namosi and Naitasiri, the Lau and Lomaiviti groups, Kadavu and nearby smaller islands, eastern Macuata and Cakaudrove provinces, southern Bua, Taveuni and nearby smaller islands. Elsewhere across the group conditions will tend to be fine apart from the typical afternoon or evening showers.

Afternoon thunderstorms with heavy falls are expected over Viti Levu and Vanua Levu, and localized heavy rain may lead to flash flooding of low-lying and flood-prone areas. For the main centres, temperatures tomorrow are generally in the mid-20s to low 30s: Navua/Suva/Nausori around 24–31°C (rising to 25–32°C on Monday), Nadi/Lautoka/Ba, Tavua/Rakiraki and the Yasawa/Mamanuca group around 24–32°C (25–32°C Monday), and Labasa and Sigatoka/Coral Coast similarly in the mid-20s to low 30s with afternoon thunderstorms likely.

Sea and wind conditions will be moderate under the prevailing easterly flow. Rotuma has a separate weak trough to its east: expect cloudy periods with brief showers, moderate to fresh easterly winds and moderate to rough seas, with temperatures near 24–32°C tomorrow and a similar outlook on Monday.

Given the potential for heavy afternoon thunderstorms, residents in low-lying and flood-prone locations should remain alert to sudden heavy falls and possible flash flooding. Mariners and those planning open-water activities should note the moderate to rough sea conditions in and around Rotuma and the generally moderate seas elsewhere.
