Beyond the headline

A weakening trough over the eastern parts of the country, combined with a moist easterly wind flow, will keep scattered cloud and showers across many islands through tonight and into tomorrow. Eastern and outlying areas should expect the most persistent activity, while the rest of the group will see generally fine conditions punctuated by afternoon or evening showers. Winds are moderate from the east and seas are moderate for most waters.

Occasional showers and isolated thunderstorms are likely over Serua‑Namosi, Navua‑Suva‑Nausori, Tailevu‑Naitasiri‑Ra, southern Bua, Cakaudrove, eastern Macuata, Taveuni and nearby smaller islands, plus Lau, Lomaiviti, Kadavu and surrounding isles. Viti Levu and Vanua Levu are expected to see afternoon thunderstorms with heavy falls; localised heavy rainfall may lead to flash flooding in low‑lying and flood‑prone areas, so residents in those zones should remain alert.

Elsewhere – including the Coral Coast, Nadi, Lautoka, Ba, Tavua, Rakiraki and the Yasawa/Mamanuca groups – fine weather is likely apart from the chance of afternoon or evening showers and thunderstorms. Temperatures in the main centres are broadly similar: maxima around 31–32°C today and overnight lows near 24–25°C, with small rises in daytime temperatures by Sunday in some areas.

Rotuma is affected by its own trough: expect cloudy periods with some showers and isolated thunderstorms, with moderate to fresh easterly winds and moderate to rough seas. Mariners and small‑boat operators around Rotuma should take particular care given the rougher conditions there; elsewhere moderate easterlies and moderate seas will prevail.

The outlook through Sunday remains much the same — cloudier and showery for eastern and smaller island groups, with afternoon thunderstorms and heavy falls again likely over Viti Levu and Vanua Levu. Because of the risk of localised heavy falls and flash flooding, people in low‑lying or flood‑prone locations should monitor local updates and avoid driving through inundated roads.
