Beyond the headline

Issued at 10:45am on Wednesday 18 March 2026: a trough of low pressure lies over Fiji and a moist northerly flow is in place, bringing widespread cloud, showers and periods of rain through tomorrow. The heaviest falls are expected in parts of the west and some outer islands, with showers gradually easing from tomorrow for many areas. Winds are moderate from the northeasterly quarter with moderate seas at present.

The Yasawa and Mamanuca groups, western Viti Levu and Kadavu and nearby smaller islands can expect occasional rain and isolated thunderstorms with heavy falls. Elsewhere across the group there will be occasional showers and an increased risk of afternoon or evening thunderstorms producing heavy falls. Localised heavy rainfall may lead to flash flooding of low-lying areas, so residents in flood-prone locations should take appropriate precautions while the trough remains active.

Major centres around the central belt — Navua, Suva and Nausori — and the west coast including Nadi, Lautoka and Ba should prepare for occasional showers and a likelihood of afternoon thunderstorms with heavy falls. Showers are forecast to ease from tomorrow. Current temperatures for Navua/Suva/Nausori are running to a daytime high near 30°C with a minimum around 24°C and a forecast high of about 31°C tomorrow; Friday is expected to be slightly warmer with lows near 25°C and highs up to about 32°C in the central belt. Nadi, Lautoka and Ba report similar temperatures with today’s maximum near 29°C and tomorrow’s high near 32°C.

Northern and outer island ports including Labasa, Savusavu, Nabouwalu and Taveuni, as well as the Lau and Lomaiviti groups, will see occasional showers with afternoon thunderstorms likely and periods of heavy rain. These areas generally show daytime maxima near 30°C today and lows near 24°C ahead of tomorrow’s highs around 31°C. Kadavu is included among areas expecting occasional rain and isolated thunderstorms with heavy falls, with rain easing from tomorrow; conditions there are similar in temperature with highs near 30–32°C.

Rotuma remains under the influence of the trough with a moist easterly flow. Expect cloudy periods with some showers and isolated thunderstorms and periods of heavy rain, with moderate to fresh easterly winds and moderate to rough seas. The general outlook for Friday across Fiji is for cloudy periods with some showers in several eastern and northern districts while most other areas become mainly fine apart from the chance of afternoon or evening showers and thunderstorms; moderate easterly winds and moderate seas are expected.
