The prosecution is urging that the criminal case against former Deputy Prime Minister Manoa Kamikamica proceed in the Suva Magistrate’s Court. FICAC prosecutor Josann Pene presented arguments before Magistrate Charles Ratakele, asserting that the case in the High Court is distinct from the ongoing proceedings at the lower court level.

Mr. Kamikamica has sought a permanent stay of his criminal proceedings in the High Court, with the hearing set for March. During the recent court session, Prosecutor Pene highlighted that all requisite disclosures have been made, and therefore, urged that Mr. Kamikamica’s plea should be addressed in the case. In contrast, defense lawyer Wylie Clarke requested that the court defer its decision until after the High Court’s ruling, citing the significance of the pending decision on the current matter.

The former deputy prime minister is facing serious charges, including perjury for allegedly making false statements under oath. Specifically, he is accused of denying involvement in the appointment of FICAC Commissioner Barbara Malimali. Additionally, he is charged with providing false information to a public servant during a Commissioner of Inquiry (COI) investigation that spanned from December 1, 2024, to March 31 of the previous year. The case has been adjourned until April 14, when further updates will be provided to Magistrate Ratakele.
