Jese Dautei Robinson has made a remarkable achievement by becoming the first male nurse to graduate with a Postgraduate Diploma in Midwifery among a group of 12 nurses in Labasa. His academic excellence was recognized with three prestigious awards: Academic Excellence in Normal Puerperium and Newborn, Academic Excellence in Normal Labour and Birth, and Overall Academic Excellence in the program.
The 32-year-old, hailing from Vunikodi Village in Udu, Macuata, celebrated his achievements at the TISI Sangam College of Nursing and Health Care Education graduation ceremony held at the Civic Centre in Labasa. Currently serving as a nurse at Nasea Health Centre, Jese shared that his decision to pursue nursing was significantly influenced by a personal tragedy—the loss of his father during his Year 11 studies.
As the second oldest of eight siblings, he felt a strong responsibility to support his family and community. Jese’s choice of midwifery as his specialty is deeply personal, driven by his desire to become a good father. He expressed his commitment to this path, stating, “I chose to become a midwife, even though I am a male nurse, because I want to become a good father.”
Jese’s wife, who is also a nurse at Labasa Hospital, shares his dedication to the field. He aspires to bring joy through childbirth, highlighting the fulfillment of helping mothers deliver safely. “To help bring a life into this world and place it in a mother’s arms is the purest joy,” he remarked.
He advocates for the inclusivity of the nursing profession, noting, “Nursing is a beautiful profession where there is no boundary set between genders. I encourage people to pursue a career in this field.” Through his groundbreaking achievements and passion for midwifery, Jese Robinson not only breaks gender barriers in his profession but also serves as an inspiration for others to chase their dreams, reinforcing the idea that compassion and skill know no gender.
This story highlights the importance of inclusivity in traditionally gendered professions and serves as an uplifting reminder of how personal experiences can shape one’s career path. Jese’s journey exemplifies the impact of compassion in healthcare, making him a role model for aspiring nurses everywhere.
