The Fiji Bitter Malake 7s rugby tournament began yesterday, marking its third edition with 64 teams gathered at Narauyaba Ground in Rakiraki for three days of competitive play.

Isoa Tute, the tournament president, stated that the event is designed to promote rugby as well as support the development of Malake Village. The tournament features 32 men’s teams, 24 under-21 teams, and 8 women’s teams, representing various regions across Fiji, including Ra.

Tute emphasized that the tournament highlights the skills of the Malake Village team and serves as a significant fundraising occasion for local projects. Two-thirds of the funds raised will be directed towards village development, while one-third will aid the Malake 7s team’s participation in other local tournaments.

“Our primary projects include renovating the church and building a gym for the village,” Tute explained. The Malake 7s committee is dedicated to a five-year fundraising strategy, ensuring that the tournament continues to foster both rugby and community improvement.
