Maika Ratuere, a rover for the Birdland Brothers, is finding inspiration from competing alongside some of rugby sevens’ top players at the McDonald’s Coral Coast Fiji 7s. This annual tournament is not just about winning for the talented young athlete; rather, it serves as a pivotal experience shaping his aspirations within the sport.
The 2024 Deans Competition-winning winger is motivated by the opportunity to share the field with international stars like Perry Baker, Harry McNulty, Rosko Specman, and members of the Swire Shipping Fijian Drua. This environment has bolstered his determination that larger goals are achievable.
Returning to the Coral Coast for a third consecutive year, Ratuere continues to build on his experiences. He made his tournament debut in 2024 and 2025 with Dominion Brothers and is now representing Birdland Brothers, a team largely comprised of former students from Ratu Kadavulevu School and Queen Victoria School.
Ratuere expressed gratitude for being part of what he describes as the country’s prime sevens tournament, stating, “My brothers and I were encouraged to come together and give the Coral Coast 7s a shot. The experience, meeting new people, and watching the top sevens players up close motivates me to push harder so that one day I can reach that level.”
At just 19 years old, Ratuere remains focused on his dream of representing Fiji. He is using the Coral Coast platform to enhance his skills and gain valuable exposure. As the Birdland Brothers head into this afternoon’s quarterfinals unbeaten in the youth category, Ratuere’s confidence reflects the potential he sees within himself.
The McDonald’s Coral Coast Fiji 7s continues into Day Two, with live coverage available on FBC Sports, allowing fans to witness the next generation of rugby talent on display. Ratuere’s journey is a testament to the power of ambition and hard work in the world of sports, offering hope for the future of Fijian rugby.
