Lynda Tabuya, the recently ousted Minister for Women, Children and Social Protection, is awaiting the outcome of her disciplinary proceedings within the People’s Alliance (PA) party over the next 21 days. This decision follows a meeting of the party’s executive committee held at their headquarters in Suva, where they addressed her disciplinary case.
This marks Ms. Tabuya’s second disciplinary review by the PA. Earlier this year, in February, she faced a committee review regarding allegations involving a sex and drug scandal linked to another minister, which culminated in her removal as deputy leader of the party. The PA later declared that the allegations had inflicted “potentially irreparable damage” on the party’s reputation.
Currently, Ms. Tabuya’s situation is further complicated by the leaking of an explicit video on Christmas Eve, showing her in a compromising situation. She has acknowledged the video’s authenticity, claiming it was meant for her former husband, Robert Semaan, whom she divorced in 2016, as indicated by an investigation from FICAC. Following the video’s release, Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka removed her from her ministerial position on December 26.
The PA’s general secretary, Sila Balawa, confirmed that the disciplinary process will be conducted in accordance with the party’s constitution, ensuring an independent review that maintains integrity and privacy. The committee has three weeks to complete its review and deliver findings. Ms. Tabuya will have the chance to present her perspective in this matter. Balawa emphasized the importance of hearing all sides before concluding the inquiry, with plans to update the media when necessary.
The current members of the disciplinary committee have not been disclosed, but the previous committee included notable members such as the Minister for Lands, Filimoni Vosarogo.
In light of these events, a transparent disciplinary process might not only clarify Ms. Tabuya’s position but also convey the PA’s commitment to accountability and due process within its ranks. This could potentially help in rebuilding trust among party members and the public, showcasing a dedication to addressing issues head-on.
Overall, the outcome of this disciplinary review may serve as a pivotal point in both Ms. Tabuya’s political career and for the PA party itself as it navigates challenging circumstances.
