Transport Minister Ro Filipe Tuisawau has instructed the Land Transport Authority (LTA) to realign its enforcement efforts, shifting the focus from bus passengers to more critical issues like drunk driving and speeding. This decision follows widespread public backlash after a video surfaced showing LTA officials penalizing a 60-year-old woman with a $150 fine for not having her bus card.

In light of this incident, LTA’s chief executive officer, Irimaia Rokosawa, has publicly acknowledged the public’s concerns. He highlighted that the LTA is striving to enhance the e-ticketing system, which has been a source of dissatisfaction among users.

Rokosawa emphasized that the immediate priority is to ensure that passengers can easily recharge their bus cards, both in rural and urban settings, and that the authority is working with its service providers to improve the number of top-up options available. He confirmed ongoing efforts to address technical issues affecting the e-ticketing system and mentioned a comprehensive review of the feedback received from the public to enhance its overall performance.

He also noted that this review will include adhering to the Electronic Fare Ticketing (Omnibus) Regulations 2017, which focus on fare payments and bus card inspections.

The LTA is committed to addressing public grievances while ensuring the e-ticketing system remains functional, transparent, and user-friendly. This approach represents a proactive step towards creating a more efficient public transport system for all Fijians.

As communities work together to enhance transportation services, this focus on critical road safety issues reflects a dedication to the well-being of all citizens, fostering a safer environment. The LTA’s commitment to improving technology and infrastructure signals a hopeful and progressive future for public transport in Fiji.
