The Land Transport Authority (LTA) has revoked the driver’s licences of eight individuals linked to fatal accidents, marking a significant move in road safety enforcement. This decision follows a tragic incident involving a 21-year-old truck driver, whose reckless actions led to the death of a 13-year-old student on Princes Road in Tacirua last week.

At a press conference, LTA Chief Executive Officer Irimaia Rokosawa stated that the truck driver, who was operating his vehicle with an expired Learner’s Permit at the time of the accident, has had his licence revoked for five years, reflecting the severity of the incident. He emphasized that this action serves as a stern reminder to all drivers about the critical importance of adhering to road safety regulations.

Rokosawa urged all licence holders, including learners, provisional, and full licence drivers, to follow the conditions of their licences. He warned that negligence in driving can have life-altering consequences for individuals and communities. “The authority has zero tolerance for reckless driving, and we will take immediate action against those who jeopardize public safety,” he reiterated.

In light of the growing issue of reckless driving that has led to increased road fatalities, the LTA is working in collaboration with the Fiji Police Force to implement stricter penalties for repeat offenders and reevaluate current traffic laws. Under the Crimes Act of 2009, driving recklessly can result in up to two years of imprisonment, highlighting the seriousness with which these infractions are treated.

Rokosawa reassured the public that the LTA is committed to pursuing showcause proceedings against those who demonstrate a dangerous disregard for road safety. The move to cancel driver’s licences is part of a broader strategy to address rising rates of traffic accidents caused by speeding, inattentiveness, and overall negligence on the roads.

In summary, the recent actions taken by the LTA indicate a proactive approach to enhance road safety and promote responsible driving in the community. While these incidents are deeply tragic, they serve as a crucial reminder for all drivers to prioritize safety, adhere to regulations, and take responsibility for their actions behind the wheel.

This initiative may help create a safer driving environment, fostering greater community awareness about the importance of road safety.
