The Land Transport Authority (LTA) has revoked the driver’s licenses of eight individuals involved in fatal accidents, a decisive move aimed at addressing the concerning issue of reckless driving. Among those affected is a 21-year-old truck driver who was responsible for a tragic incident last week on Princes Road in Tacirua, which claimed the life of a 13-year-old student.
LTA Chief Executive Officer Irimaia Rokosawa announced that these individuals were summoned for showcause proceedings in accordance with Regulation 30 of the Land Transport (Driver) Regulations 2000. The truck driver, who was operating with an expired Learners Permit at the time, faces a five-year suspension of his license due to the severity of the crash.
Mr. Rokosawa stressed that this action serves as a stern warning to all drivers regarding the repercussions of reckless behavior on the roads. He urged all drivers—irrespective of their license type—to comply with road safety regulations, emphasizing that ignoring such rules can endanger everyone’s life.
Furthermore, he highlighted that the recent fatal accident reflects a broader concern over reckless driving. The LTA is partnering with the Fiji Police Force to strengthen efforts against repeat traffic offenders and to review current traffic regulations. As per the Crimes Act 2009, driving negligently is a summary offense carrying a possible sentence of up to two years in prison.
Mr. Rokosawa reiterated the LTA’s commitment to taking urgent measures against those who show blatant disregard for road safety, particularly when it involves unlicensed driving. This proactive stance is part of a wider initiative targeting the alarming rise in traffic accidents associated with speeding, negligence, and lack of attention on the roads.
In light of recent statistics revealing an increase in road fatalities, the LTA’s measures serve not just as disciplinary actions, but as pivotal steps towards fostering a culture of accountability and safety among all road users. By emphasizing shared responsibility and fostering collaboration with law enforcement, the authority aims to create a safer driving environment for everyone.
This decisive action, while somber, reinforces a hopeful message: responsible driving is a shared duty that can protect lives and reduce tragic incidents on the roads.
