The Land Transport Authority (LTA) has announced it is taking immediate action against individuals and businesses engaged in the illegal manufacture and sale of customized number plates, including those impersonating official Government-issued registration plates. This warning follows the discovery of a counterfeit GQ plate found on a vehicle at a car show in Nadi last weekend.
LTA Chief Executive Officer Irimaia Rokosawa emphasized that the creation and display of unauthorized registration plates is illegal and poses a risk to public trust and safety. “No one is permitted to produce or display a number plate that imitates an official Government number, regardless of the setting. This is not just a legal issue; it’s a matter of public responsibility,” Rokosawa stated.
The consequences of violating this regulation can be severe, with vehicle owners facing fines of up to $100. In more serious cases, the LTA may seize vehicles displaying unauthorized number plates. Rokosawa urged vendors involved in this practice to cease immediately, emphasizing that the authority will take necessary actions against anyone found supplying or affixing unauthorized plates.
The LTA reiterates that it is the sole authority in Fiji authorized to issue vehicle registration plates. Any plates not sanctioned by the LTA are deemed illegal. This proactive enforcement approach is aligned with the LTA’s mission to enhance road safety and adhere to legal compliance.
Reflecting on similar past initiatives, the LTA has previously issued warnings regarding vehicle modifications and the illegal operation of vehicles as public service vehicles (PSVs). The emphasis on compliance throughout these initiatives showcases the authority’s commitment to ensuring that road safety is a shared responsibility and that both vehicle owners and the wider public adhere to established regulations.
As the LTA advances its efforts, the focus remains on fostering a responsible vehicle culture in Fiji where safety and legality are prioritized. This proactive stance not only protects the integrity of official vehicle identification but also promotes safer roads for all users.
